Art Talk: The Botanical Mastery of O.M. Braida - “A Passion for Plants”

Olivia Marie Braida-Chiusano, known by her artistic signature O.M. Braida, is a nature painter whose style echoes the French Court Botanical Art Masters of the 17th to 19th centuries. She is an internationally recognized nature artist and a certified botanical painter. Her artwork, a part of the permanent collection in four museums, stands as a testament to her artistic ability. She is the founder of the Academy of Botanical Art and the author of 34 textbooks.

Olivia taught in two New York studio locations she opened, and taught workshops at the New York Botanical Garden, Green Mountain College in Vermont, the University of Kentucky Arboretum in Lexington, Kentucky, and in Kauai, Hawaii.

Olivia's dedication to botanical art education is evident in her tenure at the Ringling College of Art & Design from 1998 to 2011. In 2004, she established a significant artist-educator relationship with Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Her legacy continues to thrive through the Academy of Botanical Art, whose institution offers both local and distance learners the opportunity to develop this captivating art form. Completing her course is a significant milestone for students, as it sets them on a path to nurture their professional artistic life.

Olivia's artistic ability extends beyond the canvas; her artwork serves as a vital resource for botanists. Her unique perspective as an artist allows her to capture details that scientists might overlook. Her work not only captivates with its beauty but also serves as a precise guide for the study of nature, making it a “textbook” for botanists.
