About Creative Liberties Artist Studios & Galleries

Creative Liberties co-founders Elizabeth Goodwill and Barbara Gerdeman met as summer art camp teachers at a Sarasota community art center. Eventually Elizabeth became the education director there and later hired Barbara to come back as youth program coordinator. They worked together for many years and became fast friends. As artists themselves, creativity levels run high, and they had many ideas of arts-related businesses they could do together. In 2018, the idea of Creative Liberties was born, but what it would be was yet to be decided. After much discussion it was settled that it would be a business based on a motto of “artists helping artists,” offering services for artists such as help preparing work for exhibitions, artwork inventory and photography, social media, and more.

In September 2021, an offer of a space to build artist studios came up. Staying open to possibilities, Barbara and Elizabeth said yes and the first Creative Liberties Artist Studios & Galleries was officially opened in November 2021. In January and February 2023 there were opportunities to open two more locations. Currently there are three Creative Liberties locations that offer studio space, display space, event space and classroom space. Since first opening its doors, Creative Liberties has worked with over 200 local artists and is currently home to 19 studio artists and 12 feature artists at the two Limelight District locations. Creative Liberties offers artists-in-residence opportunities at its Rosemary District location that can accommodate 1-3 artists for two months at a time. In addition to art studio and art display options, they also continue to offer the services for artists that were part of the original formation.
